Have you ever wondered what the term “microbiome” means? The microbiome is a collection of billions of microorganisms that live in our bodies. It is found in distinct areas including the eyes, mouth, skin, genitals and the all-important gut microbiome. The beneficial microorganisms do a lot of things including controlling bad bacteria, yeasts, and viruses, producing vitamins and short chain fatty acids, and supporting intestinal health and the immune system. It is essential for your pet's overall health (and yours!).
Studies of dogs and cats suggest that many of the conditions often seen in today's pets are linked to changes in the gut microbiome. These include stomach and intestinal diseases like IBD, skin conditions and urinary tract problems, and bacterial infections anywhere in the body.
How can you start to improve your pet's microbiome? Offering raw sauerkraut to your pet is one simple way.
Raw sauerkraut is a good probiotic. Good bacteria can kill bad bacteria. If the dying bad bacteria release too many toxins the animal will have loose stools. So it is best to start slowly- perhaps a ½ teaspoon of the juice in one meal a day for a few days. If the stools are still normal after a few days try ½ teaspoon in both meals. If stools are still normal for a few days then you can gradually increase the amount every few days.
